As the money will be raised chiefly from voluntary contributions and President-Elect Obama's campaign fund I don't imagine anybody will be too bothered - it isn't as if the taxpayer will be footing the bill.

I'd be more upset about the reasons why the recession happened in the first place. Or, the enormous amount of money shelled out to company and bank execs every year in bonuses which is obviously well over $150 Million. I see your point however. I had this feeling during NYE when over a million pounds was spend on JUST fireworks in central London, and god knows how much elsewhere. There are numerous other examples...

And how would you suggest that cost be offset? By not having an inaugeration? Further, the inaugeration is mostly paid from private contributions and the contributors don't seem to be hurting for dollars. The largest expense seems to have been from added security, or it would so appear.
