  • You can point up with both the question and the answer. But, most people who answer their own questions end up getting negative points because "WE" know what they are doing. Their answers are usually flagged as well. Some folks even answer twice or more trying to point up. This strategy also backfires. Many "newbies" do this by mistake at the first few levels and are forgiven. But, they will quickly learn that this is an AB rule violation amongst members.
  • Occasionally people like a second opinion as well.
  • I did it for my question on TinyURL: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/188219 Someone asked me a question elsewhere so I decided to answer it in AnswerBag. Plus it proved worthwhile because Elitheeli added his own explanation (thanks) which helps make it easier to explain. :) Here are some more examples: # Sometimes I need to add more to my question and there is not enough space: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/232081 # I also answer a few of my questions with an example: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/290981 # Other times I just want to add my opinion to the fray: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/286411 [Edit: Links instead of question titles.]
  • Because if I expect everyone else to answer, why would I not do so myself?
  • like Led Zepelin once sung Dazed and Confused or to be reassured with a second opinion
  • I asked a similar question recently... http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/121270
  • examples? maybe kinda like how in your question you basically asked why people do this, and then said that they do it because they want to know what something means. But you saved yourself by adding- do they do it to get more points? I agree though- that's rediculous. you may as well find a blog called statementbag, and simply say what you have to say.
  • Please see my answer here: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/121270 Since I answered that question I have asked a few questions that I knew the answer to just to liven things up on AnswerBag (there were no new questions and AB was getting boring). When/if I did not receive a correct response I eventually added the right answer. :) For example: http://tinyurl.com/ypq7lw
  • In general, people do that to increase the knowledge base on AB, and to make a point.
  • because they think of a really good answer to a question that hasnt been asked yet, its just chancing for more points. in my case, i cant comment so to reply to comments i must answer the questions and hope the user notices it.
  • Sometimes they do it to make the question easier to understand!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I answered my own cuz nobody else answered.
  • But I see I cant rate my own. neat
  • They know what the correct answer is?
  • Don't know, seems rather pointless to me. Does it hurt to pat your own back? :o)
  • There are people who talk to themselves, too. It is a slight mental disorder or a consequence of social isolation. Sad.
  • just wondering!
  • haha. because they know the answer and they want to give it. there's a few questions i wish would be asked just so i could answer them. but i'm not going to ask just so i can do that.
  • I should know!
  • From my answer here: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2187506 Time to hit the button on the old way back machine. Here is an explanation I gave when some I got -3 on the Q What is anxiety? and another ABer did it because I answered "my own question": "These were once glossary terms (note: was originally just the term anxiety) and NOT questions. I have been on AB since 2004 and a lot has changed since then. PLUS, AB a lot of people (since there were no points) asked and answered to make the site interesting for future users. Before DRing please check the Q/A dates instead of assuming the worst." I also answer some of mine just to share with other ABers, I mark those ***DO NOT RATE*** to be fair of course.
  • I cannot. I am too wordy for that. I usually ask a question because something has sparked my interest and, since I do not get any more points than anyone else (often less) I want to be able to answer it too. I also answer my own question when I cannot provide enough details in the question or I want to put a longer URL in it. The software makes cobbling together URL's from the question box annoying.
  • On the technical side, because the system allows it. On Yahoo Answers, users can't answer their own questions. On a more personal note, I do that because there are things that can't be put in the main question itself. One good example is a screenshot.
  • Questions have a limited number of characters available. If possible, it is much easier to ask a simple question, and give an answer to either provide an example or to flesh out the question.
  • There isn't always space to put your opinion, and it is nice to see what other peoples perception on things are, you can then make a decision or look at the whole picture from 'outside the box' and other peoples input could give you additional options/scenario's and ideas
  • not really, but i see how that could be irritating... why would they ask a question if they already know the answer! grr lol
  • People are always asking duplicate questions..some questions get asked many many times over the years. Sometime I answer the question the way I did months before..sometimes I answer it differently..depends on how I feel. The person asking the question is new...doesn't know it's been asked before. Many of the people on AB are new..so to them it is a brand new question. Now, with some difficulties in posting, sometimes a question will show up twice and sometimes an answer won't post so you try again and then you have two answers. Too many variables to get irritated. Just my opinion. Happy Sunday! :)
