Some of them are plays on words: "Diagon Alley", where the students buy their supplies is a pun on the word "diagonally". Sirius Black's name comes from the Dog Star, Sirius, and relates to Sirius having the ability to morph into a black dog. The spell name "Prior Incantato" means that the wand can recall the prior incantation it cast. A lot of the ideas and objects are clever plays on words, or are derived from old Latin or classical words for similar ideas.

The Dursleys were named after the town of Dursley in Gloucestershire in England near where she was born. The Philosopher's Stone was one of the key concepts of alchemy for example. It is possible to determine what a spell does if you just break apart the word. Also, I LOVE the names that she gives her characters. You get a little hint as to what they are like. For example: Remus Lupin- Remus and Romulus were two brothers in mythology raised by wolves. Also Lupin comes from a Latin word meaning wolf. Doloros Umbridge- Dolor means sorrow and umbrage refers to something offensive or displeasurable.
