Probably because Ericsson has a much better flow to it than Ericssdotter when spoken. Also, in most places the female takes the last name of the male when they get married. A lot of names have fallen away due to that.

Because most women adopt the name of their husband upon marriage, so their offspring have his name, not hers.

The most likely expalaination of this is that A) Women tend to take the family name of their husbands ans B) Most cultures today are male dominated, therefore the female names have been dropped from use.

I believe that in Iceland they haven't. This can lead to the confusion where two children of the family can have different surnames, and this is the reason that the entries in Icelandic telephone directories are sorted by forenames.
