the gluteus maximus is capable of the hardest contraction, the gastrocnemius (one of 2 calf muscles) is the most powerful (strength x speed). when it comes to the force exerted biting down there are multiple muscles working together on a very small lever (the temporo-mandibula joint) so i tend not to count that as being the strongest. the gluteus maximus is the biggest muscle with the most fibres and each fibre in any particular muscle is capable of more or less the same force exertion when it contracts and since it has the most fibres it can contract the hardest.
