the butterfly stroke engages the ab muscles more. but this is a tiring stroke, and the key to weight loss is extended cardio. swimming is a great way to lose weight, especially if you swim for half an hour or longer every day (or every other day). i would say your best bet is freestyle, since that stroke can be maintained for longer than the butterfly.

if you really want to loose weight around your middle area, speaking from experience try doing sit ups, leg lifts, and crunches. don't do too many and don't over work yourself. set a goal for example do like 20 every day for like 2 weeks. then do a little more. it takes alot of self confidence and you have to be motivated.
