Salt has a history that goes back way before Man learnt to stand upright. It's essential to life, and an essential component of blood: human, animal, bird, or fish. Without salt, we would die in a matter of days. It's the only rock that we can eat. Beef, pork, bacon, and fish are all preserved by packing them in salt, which incidentally improves the flavour. Mark Kurlansky has a book titled "Salt." It's a history of salt, with explanations of of its hundreds of uses. . The word "salary" comes from the fact that soldiers of the Roman Empire were paid in salt. A man who doesn't do well is "not worth his salt." We take things "with a grain of salt" because the blunt truth is bitter, and salt will make it taste better. "Salad" is called that because it is salted. .
