There's the Encyclopedia Britannica, which states that Muhammad is "the only founder of a major world religion who lived in the full light of history and about whom there are numerous records in historical texts, although like other pre-modern historical figures not every detail of his life is known." The religious scholar Solomon Nigosian, a Christian, says in his work "Islam: Its History, Teaching, and Practices," that there are several non-Muslim sources. I don't have his citations.

There are indeed non-Muslim sources who have not just written about the existence of the Prophet Mohammed as a real historical person but have been deeply impressed by him. For example, here's what the historian Alphonse de Lamartine is reported to have said in his HISTOIRE DE LA TURQUIE, Paris: "As regards all the standards by which Human Greatness may be measured, we may well ask, IS THERE ANY MAN GREATER THAN HE?" I imagine as with doubt of the authenticity of prophets and religious leaders of other groups he probably did exist. All religions have a part in indulging the prophet/saviours beyond their stature they enjoyed during their own lifetime. But I would find it much more unlikely that a movement or religous group would create a holy leader when history has always shown that people want to be the leader and often substitute images or information to suit their own ends. However on a related note, Muhammad Sven Kalisch, a Muslim convert and Germany's first professor of Islamic theology, decided that evidence was such that he decided to suggest Mohammad probably never existed.
