  • They are big. Human beings tend to have a much closer relationship with big animals. Small dogs and cats and some pets are exceptions to that but we usually associate large animals with being worthwhile and worthy of a relationship with us and small animals as not being worthwhile. Example: Who cares if they kill 10000 ants as opposed to one horse?
  • Horses are beautiful and loyal. They are also very expensive (always have been) so they are a bit of a status symbol.
