Hubble found from his observations of the red-shift of stars and galaxies that everything was moving away from each other at a rate proportional to the distance an object is from another. This implied that the universe was expanding and further implied that at one point all the mass in the universe must have been very close together giving rise to the big bang theory. It's much like blowing up a balloon with dots drawn all over it. The dots represent the stars or galaxies. Every object moves apart from each other, but those further apart move away from each other faster. Let the balloon (without tying it) and you get what the universe might have looked like some 13 to 15 billion years ago.
