The SA was one of the Nazi Party's paramilitary organisations. SA is abbreviated for "Sturmabteilung", which translates roughly as "Storm troops". The SA was more important in the eary days of the Nazis, before they gained power in Jan. 1933.

The SA (Sturmabteilung) was indeed an organization of the party. After the compulsary service as hitler boys, every German man was obliged to join the SA when he was 17 years old. This way the government wanted to keep people in control and being a member of the Hitler youth or the SA there was not much leisure time. The weekends and the evenings were mostly planned and the men understood a quite severe discipline. Having all men under permanent control they could not get rebellious and the SA was preparing also for the service in the army.
