  • Everybody is different and it really depends on how quickly he regains his movement if any. The amount of ischaemia (damage) is different for everybody. With a dense stroke where no movement or speech is present some do not recover. Some get minimal movement and speech back within 6 months, and some people recover completely with only minimal lasting effects. Where speech has been lost a speech and language therapist will help to regain what is possible. What happens is that your father will know what he wants to say but it becomes mixed up by the time it gets to saying it. I have a patient who we spend most of the time confirming what he wants by him saying Yes or No, but even then he gets muddled. You will find your father getting very frustrated and you just have to be patient with him. Taking time and not placing pressure on him will help him to recover better minimising his stress. Just be prepared that he may not recover, that way, any little hurdle he overcomes will be such a blessing.
