  • i hated animal farm when we had to read it in HS
  • I like both, but I prefer 1984. Many, many things are memorable about it, but the character of Big Brother is probably the most important.
  • I liked both. Both were extremely thought provoking. But 1984 was more fun to read. I suppose that is because it was built around the life of a character I found sympathetic and identified with. There was no such single character in Animal Farm.
  • Both are good, but 1984 is one of those books that provokes serious emotion. I squeezed the pages, at times I thought I would tear it in half. I growled and cursed and gnashed my teeth. At the end, I threw the book against a wall. And I tried to convince myself that the ending wouldn't have been mine, and tried to ignore the fear that I would have been broken just as easily. Not many books can make you doubt yourself and the trust you put in other people like this one. Animal Farm was a wonderful allegory, but 1984 is necessary reading for modern life.
  • I'm afraid I'm going to have to take the easy way out and say both. Animal Farm because it described the rise of the USSR (Trotter-Trotsky...hmmm... purely coincidence?) 1984, scared me when I read it, because it was so plausible, and now, many aspects of it have come to fruition...
  • 1984, i am still paranoid from reading it!
  • 1984 is the better book in my opinion and the most memorable is when winston and julia are stood in front of the statue and just barely touch hands
  • I loved Animal Farm the best. I remember reading it in high school... I just thought the story was very creative and interesting.
  • Hard to choose. Both offer very useful lessons about life, politics and the corruption that often comes with power. If I had to pick, I would say 1984. It still blows my mind at how eerily true it rings today. Like another poster, the book makes me think of how I would have found another way, yet feeling unable to shake the feeling my fate would have been Winston's no matter how strong my will.
