because they have a virtual monopoly and can charge whatever. There is simply no program in it's league. I love open source alternatives like the gimp and paint shop pro is useful, but none are in photoshop's class. When you have a product that is relied on all over the world and you have no competitors, that leads to high prices

Besides the actual cost of research,deveopment, marketing, and distrubation you have the old what the market is willing to spend. Often you can find older versions of these programs at discounted prices and I would guess they would fill most needs very well.
