Is there a piece of software that will understand the text in a scanned document image file and convert it into a formatted text file?

    If you have microsoft office, then you already have an OCR progam. Its called Microsoft Office Document Imaging and it's in your Microsoft Office Microsoft Office Tools folder. I used it a few years ago when I scanned my Fathers typewritten book to edit it and put it onto a CD. Also, as already mentioned, there is SimpleOCR which is free.

    Yes, this is called OCR software which is short for Optical Character Recognition software. Many scanners come with free lite versions of such software. There is a free version called SimpleOCR available on the net- do a google search for it.
