"Historical atlas of the United States" by the National Geographic Society.

Now out-of-print but still available, a twelve-volume set entitled "The Smithsonian Guide to Historic America". Well-written and informative with superb photos/illustrations, a kinda 'geographical history' (or 'historical geography') which (I'm imagining) would be too cool to take along on an extended 'road trip'! - ;-)
