  • Don't let them know as you could find yourself needing that new job sooner than you thought. It's the rare boss who can see from your point of view your need for a new job. HE thinks your salary is fine, if not a bit excessive, or else he would pay you more, for example.
  • It depends on the relationship that you have with your boss/employer. Generally speaking, it is not a good idea. However, if you have a trusting relationship, then it could be fine to do so.
  • Nope, keep it quiet. Most applications ask for the reference then ask if they can contact your current employer, you can say no for obvious reasons. If you tell, they could see you as an employee who's already mentally checked out and just help you along by giving you unplanned vacation early and "don't come back". Interviewers should be able to accommodate you outside of regular work hours and, if they can't, they aren't looking for quality people in my opinion.
  • I can't give a yes/no answer to this question because it would depend on the circumstances. If I was not bothered about keeping my present job, then I wouldn't care if they knew or not. If I really liked the job I was in, but saw a better one advertised, then I would keep it a secret, because there is no point in everyone knowing, unless I got the new job, then I would tell them obviously. Just recently, I was in this position because it wasn't clear if my temporary contract would be renewed, so everyone knew I was looking for another job. It turned out that my contract was made permanent, so I stopped looking for other work.
