  • I'm not Amish, but from what I've heard, the most common reasons for leaving are the requirement to serve as pastor or bishop if called and or the desire to get more education than is allowed to an Amish man or woman. Serving as a pastor or bishop is a heavy responsibility and the willingness to serve is required of all who join the church. Many of the Amish and Mennonites that I've known are extremely intelligent and I've known of more than a few that ended up with a terminal degree when they left.
