Not sure as I gave my wife a laptop for X-Mas last year (2007) and she hasn't turned it off yet. Watch for the signs... 1. Lap getting too warm for comfort. 2. Processes locking up more than normal (Windows only) 3. Wife screaming, "Put that damn thing away and come to bed!" 4. Your best friend in the world is a 53rd level Orc in World of Warcraft named "Fuzzy." Any of these signs can indicate your laptop has been on too long. Seriously... it depends on a lot of things and it mostly has to do with how well your laptop was manufacturered. I would suspect that in the past year my wife's Macbook Pro has been shut down less than 40 times and that was just to get to her favourite coffee shop/wi-fi access node and back. In my job we have an old panasonic "tuffbook" that we use to monitor some equipment that hasn't been turned off in over three years and it's still going fine. So I guess it's up to you. Just how far do you want to push it. Note: use the battery, notebook batteries can go bad quicker if they're not being used. Hope this helps.

Assuming you don't block the fans, they are at least as robust as any desktop so there really isn't any maximum. I would shut it off (or at least put it to sleep) if you plan to shove it in a bag/case though.
