No they don't use a different version, its just that the Koran is interpreted many different ways by different kinds of Muslims.

There are extremist in all religions, not just Islam. There are always going to be people who try to justify killing by hiding behind religion. The Quran is actually explains itself quite clear. However, different factions interpret it as it suits them.
-
Let's see... Christians have never killed anyone in the name of religion. Oh wait... the Crusades. Oh, and the Inquisition. And the exploitation of native Americans in central and south America. What version of the Bible were they using? And the Jews too. With the help of the Europeans, we kicked the Muslims out of our mutual holy land and now we shoot them with advanced weaponry and bulldoze their houses.
-
Extremists are found in every religion or culture. They believe things should... MUST, rather, be a certain way. For the most part they will twist everything, including their holy books, to suit their needs. It doesn't help that most holy books are riddled with inconsistencies which make it all to easy to use them for your own needs. There are parts of the Bible that seem to readily condone slaughtering your enemies, men and non-virgin women alike, and taking the virgins as slaves for yourself. Surely, society wouldn't consider this a moral action today.

It's not a peaceful religion. Look at how it got started and how it spread. I'm not saying that Christians are all virgins either. In fact, just about every religion that smug away about being peaceful is just about the opposite. The same goes for Islam, Judaism, Christians, and yes, even Buddhaism. It's funny though, do a google on "peaceful religion", and it's all about Islam. Now that's a sign right there.

Islam isn't peacefull

The question should be are muslims peaceful people? Then you can solve that question by looking at your Doctors, and restaurant Owners, and some of your neighbors who are muslim (Not to mention European Muslims in USA, American born muslims and American converts to Islam) and look deeply to see how many times have they tried to kill you. Then if you find that they did not harm you in any way then you can conclude that Muslims are peaceful. Better still take a trip to a muslim country and see if you get kidnapped on the plane, shot at the airport, assasinated in the hotel, gun downed in the market place or poissoined by the local chef, and if not then you can conclude that muslims are peaceful people. Now if you rape someone's daughter, mother, sister or wife, that is another matter. If they remain peaceful despite all insults, and attacking of their culture, language, religion that must tell you something about their sense of morality. How many of the muslim are filling the prisons of western Countries in comparrison to Jews, Christians and members of other religions? Actually in the USA more people leave Jail Muslim after entering Jail Christian and the system seems to like this kind of rehabilitation. Another approach is to find the one country in the world with the largest muslim population and study how many wars that country has been in and how much terrorism it has supported. Then if you find that it does not support terrorism and has had less wars than most western Countries you can conclude that Muslims are peaceful people. Another approach would be to see how many muslims (population)there are in the world as a whole and how many of them percentage wise have ever killed someone or harmed someone or ever committed acts of terrorism and if you find that the percentage is less than 50 percent you can conclude that muslims are peaceful people. Other than a serious academic approach, you can believe what ever you wish but distortions of the facts do not mean much in the end. Terrorist existed and do exist in any culture and every religion and anyone who does not believe this is seriously out of touch with reality and world History! The founding fathers on the Dollar bill were Religious people (Not muslims) and to a certain degree, some of them enslaved or killed others who were viewed as wrong or bad (Enemy/inferior) or it was percieved a ok because they were in the military or the elite. Every society had a feudal error and heros who were military personalities but muslims were the first global economy and violence was aimed at the muslims from the non muslim west on several occassions. It is a well know fact that the British government manipulated extremist views in Arabia to allow Britan to increase its territory in India, gain Palestinean terrories, as well as remove Turkish rule from India and Arabia and Palestine. How did they do this? They found clever fools that they could use to mis represent the Quran and cause a movement that in the end will shed muslim blood and serve no one but Great Britan. That and the colonialism of so many muslim countries around the world by European mostly Christian nations, and the modern foreign policies have created a sitution where more clever fools can again manipulate people twisting and turning the Quran to shed muslim and non muslim blood and in the end it seems that only the wealthy Defense manufactures and contractors stand to benefit as well as who evers gains more territory in the end. (Usually not the muslims) I think that all people are good if you give them a chance to be your friend and treatt them they way you expect others to treat you but if you prefer to to make someone your enemy by your actions then naturally you create a situation where things can get out of hand. As far as the quran read it once, twice, maybe seven times from cover to cover and if it move you to go out an kill someone then check yourself into the nearest mental home but if it it allows you to reflect on your inner self then give it the respect due.

First of all for those who might think that Islam condones the use of force for converting people I’d say Islam and forced conversion are almost contradictory terms. Please see http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/5397362 for details. But then someone quoted HQ 8:12 as if to say well what about this then? Actually the verse is not very relevant to forced conversion really and neither is it an open command “to kill the infidels” as the question puts it. First some background. The HQ is not a recollection of events penned down like a diary by someone. The HQ was compiled over a period of some 23 years. As revelation came down a few verses at a time to address a particular situation, it was memorised and written down. The verse quoted is one of several sent down to address a battle situation. I am not a military analyst but we’ll give it a go. We’re talking about a group of people who were subjected to persecution, torture and even murder in Mecca for about 13 years before they left what they had and escaped to Medina where they found refuge. The Meccan pagans would still not leave these people alone. They started waging war against Medina. These refugees were after peace, their morale was flagging with this constant battering. They needed pepping up very badly. The particular situation is of an impending confrontation between the Muslims and one of two Meccan pagan contingencies, one of which was armed for battle. The battle-weary refugees wished that they would face the contingency that was not armed for battle. We pick up the passage from there. 8:7-8 “Behold! God promised you one of the two (enemy) parties, that it should be yours: Ye wished that the one unarmed should be yours, but God willed to justify the Truth according to His words and to cut off the roots of the Unbelievers, that He might justify Truth and prove Falsehood false, distasteful though it be to those in guilt. The Muslims fear they don’t stand a chance against the battle-ready enemy and plead for divine help. 8:9-10 Remember ye implored the assistance of your Lord, and He answered you: "I will assist you with a thousand of the angels, ranks on ranks." God made it but a message of hope, and an assurance to your hearts: (in any case) there is no help except from God. and God is Exalted in Power, Wise. These were people who had left their homes in Mecca for peace in Medina. The thought of battle must have filled them with nervousness and made some waver. Their nerves needed calming and they needed some rousing pep talk. 8:11-12 Remember He covered you with a sort of drowsiness, to give you calm as from Himself, and he caused rain to descend on you from heaven, to clean you therewith, to remove from you the stain of Satan, to strengthen your hearts, and to plant your feet firmly therewith. Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them." I hope you’ll see once we put the verse into its context and zoom out a bit it becomes clear that not only does the verse have nothing to do with forced conversion, you can’t even use it to support an accusation that Muslims were aggressive to people, infidels or not.
