  • If the timing chain breaks, it doesn't run at all, period. The kicking backwards sounds like detonation. For some reason, it isn't firing on one cylinder for several revolutions, allowing gas to build up in that cylinder. When it does finally fire, there is a HUGE explosion because of all the available fuel. So my thought is an electrical problem. Somewhere between the coil and that cylinder, you aren't getting current. If it were a fuel problem, you wouldn't have any fuel to detonate. If there were a compression problem, it wouldn't have the compression to detonate. I would start by having someone crank the engine for you at night, in the dark, while you stand and watch it run. If there is a break in the insulation somewhere, you'll see it arc in the dark. If you don't find it that way, you'll have to do it the hard way. Start with new spark plugs, plug wires and coil wires. They are the cheapest parts and they probably need to be replaced anyway. Make sure you get a good look at each spark plug as you take it out, as that will tell you a good bit about the condition of the engine. It might even tell you which cylinder is detonating. If that doesn't get it running, then look at the coil wire and distributor or coil packs, whichever that model has. Here is a link to a site that shows the diagnostics that can be done by reading the spark plugs. It shows the damage that detonation can do to the plugs. This is how mechanics diagnosed engines before they all learned to rely too heavily on computers. If you scroll down about halfway, you'll see plug damage from detonation. If you find a plug with that type of damage, make a note of which cylinder you removed it from. If the problem is coming from coil packs, it will tell you which pack to replace. http://www.centuryperformance.com/spark-plug-reading-spg-192.html
