I think because its a hallmark of the times we live in...where a once "holy" day (whether or not you're "Christian" doesn't matter because the Winter Solstice has always been important for every spirituality) has been subverted into a marketing scheme - rather overtly. The commercialization of Christmas is just an emblematic example of how our culture itself has moved away from genuine human well-being (which spiritual practice is supposed to exist for) towards a purely consumer mindset. When did the "Economy" begin to trump one's individuality? This is a prime example of how our culture does not account for human need - instead of measuring "quality of life" as happiness or contentment, we typically do so (by default) through measurements of "standard of living" which is a quantitative expression of monetary accessibility.

Something about some Jewish kid... I hear there was some lynching and we're all supposed to remember his birthday for some reason.
