  • Any handmade rag paper would be good. It has a very nice surface and makes almost anything look great.
  • Experiment with your technique? Your applicators? Or the substrate? This can be the most fun part of art! Experimenting and exploring what your medium and tools are capable of. For technique, find a smooth surface with low absorbtion. You want to be able to see clearly what effects you are having with your method of application. This is also the type I would choose for experimenting with applicators (pen, brush, etc). Different substrates will produce very different results so I would experiment on all kinds of papers and surfaces. Find out how each affects your ink. Also, use the ink as wash by treating it like watercolor and seeing how the different watercolor techniques affect it.
  • Bristol board, smooth vellum. Here's an idea: Take a piece of 1/8" masonite and apply thin coats of Acrylic Gesso (sanding between coats with very fine paper). Build up the coats until you have a smooth ground to work on. Will take stain, thinned ink and india ink stroke very nicely.
