Yes. Sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations and induce acute psychosis.

Absolutely..and even then the person that isn't sleeping doesn't realise it's hallucinations..not long after that the staggering kicks in....eventually, the person will need to be tranq'd to sleep..been there done that..almost made it two weeks :)

Aside from the legal jeopardy, LSD would be a MUCH safer way to have hallucinations. In all but the mentally unstable, LSD hallucinations are lucid. That means you sense strange things, but know it isn't real. Sleep deprivation, on the other hand, tends to produce psychosis. You don't know that the visions, sounds, smells and feelings are not real. Being mobile but completely unaware of your actual environment can be VERY dangerous to yourself and others. As DreAnna pointed out, extended sleep deprivation can start you on a downward spiral that will require aggressive medical intervention to break. LSD, on the other hand, will wear off in a few hours. Finally, research shows that even minor sleep deprivation over a sustained period of time vastly increases your risks of arterial disease and heart attack. If you are thinking of this as a way to have fun, I strongly advise taking up a different sport.
