Able to execute under pressure and also being assertive. Also to have a lot of bravery.

Able to inspire great numbers of people by being charismatic, inspirational (obviously) and to a degree, persuasive so they believe in your ability to do what you say you will do. To this end, despite being a terrible, evil person, I must state that I think Hitler was a great leader. It's such a pity that his ideas were, for the most part, completely immoral. No doubt I'll get some bad ratings here...

A great leader has more interest in the well-being of the whole than they do in their own ego. It's that interest which guides their thinking and action, it's that commitment which gives them their view of life and the courage to ignore the inevitable difficulties and enemies that one acquires in leadership. A leader is "used by" their commitment, they have a sense of riding a wave which is larger than themselves and larger than any particular individual. A leader does not get entangled in the power that flows their way as a result of surrendering to their commitment... the power is "recycled" into the actions and vision needed to excel. The phrase "power corrupts" does not apply to a great leader, because the self-centeredness which is the real catalyst for that corruption is well under control in such a person. Think Gandhi, Jesus, Buddha, Martin Luther King, Jr., etc. NOT Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot. Great leaders are a force for good.

Essentially, a leader is someone with followers, but a great leader is a person who brings out the potential in other people and releases them for greatness. If a leader is a person with followers, a great leader is a person who is reproducing greatness in people.
