You have a right triangle. The line joining latch to wall hits the wall at right angles. The hypotenuse is 3ft, the line to the wall is opposite the angle you want and is d feet long. SOHCAHTOA says if you have opposite and hypotenuse, you can make the Sine of an angle. sin angle = d/3 angle = arcsin d/3
