Have 4 wheel drive...just bought 2 new tires that are on the rear....front tires are 2 yrs old.. just heard yesterday that if you use 4 wheel drive you need to have all 4 tires the same or it will ruin your transmission if you use 4 wheel drive....true?

Are they severly different sizes? because if they are the same size they are fine. You may have some interesting driving problems if the front ones are bald when the front tires are called on.

It can cause faster wear on the transfer case and all the transmission goodies. The difference in the diameter of the wheels can cause parts to wear out since all 4 tires are supposed to spin at the same speed. The tires with the smaller diameter (the worn down ones) would have to spin faster to keep up with the newer ones or vice versa. It causes more stress on the 4WD system. If you use the 4WD system often you should replace the older tires with the same type of tires you just installed.
