The 4x4 engages with a little box inside of which are basically tiny little brushes. As they get older, the bristles on those brushes corrode and/or break. I got a '99, and it's STARTING to give me grief. I have to throw it in P to get the 4x4 to turn off. My buddy has a '92 (I think it's a '92) and he actually has to throw it in reverse to get the 4x4 to turn off. And when his turns off, it feels like he's running over a log. Solenoid wouldn't have too much to do with it. Yeah, the transfer box could be bad. I'd pick the cheaper of the two and replace it to see where you stand.
