How to remember it: Nature tries to make them the same concentration. But the solute can't move, only the water. So all it can do is move the water to the more concentrated side to try to dilute it.

Osmosis is a random process, the particles bounce into the membrane, and the ones hitting it at the right angle will make it though. If there are more particles doing so on one of the side, or bouncing more rapidly (higher energy) it will be more likely that more of them pass. (the % rate has not been increased, but its now the same % passing from a higher amount. If you have 100molecules and 50% pass, 50 will pass, if you have 200, 100 will.) Facts: Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a semi permable membrane. The water will randomly diffuse, but at a higher diffusion gradient coming from the higher to the lower concentration because of the % factors described above. Diffusion rate can be increased by increasing the energy.
