  • I believe I heard that Stevie Ray Vaughan was self-taught, and I doubt for self-taught they get much better than that! Here is a pic of SRV with Jeff Beck
  • HENDRIX
  • Heres a few, 1 Stevie Ray Vaughan 2 Jimmi Hendrix 3 Esteban Echeverría 4 Jimmy Page 5 BB King 6 Carlos Santana Those Just a few I can think of..Stevie At the top of the list Ofcourse.
  • Erik Mongrain is an amazing player. Definitely on a different scale from those already mentioned though since most of his stuff is lap-tapping or along the lines of Michael Hedges.
  • In addition to the ones already named..I would add David Gilmour...I read somewhere that he was self-taught and I think he he awesome.
  • Tommy Emmanuel is self-taught I think and one hell of a player for certain. I taught myself guitar and bass guitar (and a few others) but I am classically trained on 'cello and double bass which came first so I had a grounding in music before I started to teach myself.
  • The best self taught guitarist of all time is Stevie Ray Vaughann. He would sneak into his brothers room and play his guitar whenever he was home alone. He would also endure countless amounts of beatings from his brother who was considered to be the best guitarist in texas by some at that time. Then Stevie grew up and became one of the most prolific guitarists of all time, hands down. RIP
  • Alan Holdsworth belongs on this list, I believe.
  • Eddie Van Halen.
  • First of all, Jimmy Page is the best guitarist ever to fondle a guitar, second he was NOT self taught. He was a studio musician, he knew every aspect of music thoroughly. That is why Led Zeppelin is the best, they all were the BEST at what they did, hands down.
  • Yea, Jimi and Stevie were the best self taught guitarists! Their legacy will keep inspiring people to generation to generation. It's just different man, when you look up to great guitarists like John Mayer-Eric Clapton compared to Jimi Hendrix-Stevie Ray Vaughan. Those are the best names on guitar prodigies list but the self-taught guitarists always spice up the list with myriad amount of SOUL :P IMO Oh, by the way, when you're just tired of getting yourself looked up here, playing your guitar. I would recommend you do what Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo do, experiment with your axe, dude! It's more than just a musical theory and stuff. hehehe... just another opinion.
