None of it makes sense to me at all, and I always thought of myself as a fairly reasonable person

Yeah, I screwed up my credit because I made the mistake of being to infatuated, I thought I was in love. Now I'm getting harassed by credit card companies and everyone else I have owed money too, because I just wanted to impress a woman. I won't make that mistake again.

There is an old saying... "love and reason are sworn enemies." I do tend to believe that when the person has little control over themselves.

It doesn't rob you of your reason, because it will come back to you as soon as you're no longer in love. I think that love just teaches us to ignore our logic, even when it's trying to tell us that the other person isn't right, and we just choose to ignore it.
