  • He wasn't cruel to his army by the standards of his day. Many of the soldiers were not Carthaginians, but raised from countries with which he formed alliances on his march around the Mediterranean. It's hard to keep troops that are not from your own country if you mistreat them. He pushed hard, but he won almost all the time. Winning meant a chance to pillage and plunder, a big bonus of the time, and troops of the era often embarked on such campaigns just to get a share of the battlefield spoils.
