Dr. James Naismith. He was born 06 November 1861 near Almonte, Ontario, in what is now Canada. While studying at Springfield College in Massachusetts, James developed the precursor to basketball for an assignment in his Physical Education class. Oddly enough, he originally was going to use boxes, but all the school janitor had on had for him to use was a couple of old peach baskets. http://collections.ic.gc.ca/naismith/

I don't remember the year, but it was invented in Canada and derived from a game played back then called "Frog on a rock". The Man who invented B-ball refined the game. He was a prof and coach at a university in the N.E. USA to replace football during the winter.... All this and I cannot stand either game....

Spastic, often ridiculed by other dinosaur-birds because of his clumsiness, would ski down slopes in Provost, Utah and frequently crash into giant trees. Hand eye coordination was discovered to be nill by Neuroanthropologist Kenneth >Primalevent who had been rummaging through the clod's remains and noted: "He once tried to shoot a basketball sized dinosaur egg into a bucket constructed from prehistoric bush bark. Cave paintings from ancient sportswriters confirm that sketches of Spastic trying to shoot hoop were often accompanied by the pre-language symbols for the word "airball" or the term "not even close". Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, invented basketball so that his students would have a game to play indoors during the winter months. Naismith wanted his students to shoot a leather soccer ball into a box attached to the wall, but when a box was not available, a janitor nailed peach baskets to the balcony railing of the gym, thus setting the height of present-day basketball baskets at ten feet above the ground. One of the students wanted to call the game Naismith ball, but the inventor dubbed it simply "basketball." The game became popular among college students, and the first professional basketball game took place when players in Trenton, New Jersey, charged spectators for admission to a game in order to pay the cost of renting the gym...."
