The Passion of Christ.

I always believed it was The Passion of The Christ. Kristos was a Greek word meaning something like God/King, so being called The Christ was like being called The King, which is where we have this idea of him being called The King of the Jews. Passion is quite simply a very strong emotion, so calling his suffering a passion gives an idea of how much he suffered. So the Passion of The Christ can also read 'the suffering of one man they call "King"'.

It is called the Passion of the Christ. Christ comes from the Greek word Christos and means Anointed One, and is the translation of the Hebrew word, Messiah. Passion actually comes from passio, and does mean to suffer. It has nothing to do with emotion in the sense we typically think of it now, but that meaning has been added to it in English. (Note: we can be passionate about something to the point that we endure great pain to see it through, which is how the emotional status was attributed to the word). Essentially, the phrase means the suffering of Jesus. If you were to read passion as an emotion, it would not be totally off base though because this suffering was a great expression of his love for man.
