Because the nastiness may be justified.

There is more than nice, to respect in people, I do not think you should respect an older person if they do not earn your respect, but you shouldnt be mean to any elder.

We respect them, because they have lived before us! Unless an older person is rude to me, they ALWAYS get my respect.

If a person's trying to be nice to an elder and they're mean to that person anyway without any reason, then I can see why one would feel annoyed at rather than respect for that elder. Perhaps eventually one might discover extenuating circumstances for the old-timer's nastiness that could alter one's perception, but I don't see that as being a constant. I'm 61 but I don't think that gives me the right to unload on someone younger than I am who isn't bothering me. Also, how do we know that some of the trolls that occasionally infest AB aren't 60+ years old? :p As a paradigm for disrespectable elders, there's always Chuckles Manson who turned 74 last November. ;)
