We have one gallone of water. At 6 a.m half the water is removed. At 7 a.m half of the remaining water is removed. If this process of removing half the remaining water each hour continues, how much water will remain at 11:30 a.m. the next day?

How many full hours has it been (not half because you're only taking water out on the hour)? Then, since every hour your having it again, you are basically multiplying by 1/2 each time you do this. So the first hour was 1/2 then the second hour was 1/2 X 1/2 which equals 1/4. The third was 1/2 X 1/2 X 1/2 = 1/8 Multiplying the same number over and over is taking to the power of however many times you've multiplied it. Such as 5X5X5X5=5^4=625. So you've got 1/2 (the number you're multiplying by every hour) to the power of however many hours you're going to do this.
