Because the earth's axis always points in the same direction in space (toward the same stars), a tilted axis relative to the plane of the earth's orbit around the sun causes annuao seasons, when poles are tilted alternately toward (summer) and away (winter) from the sun. Today -- December -- is winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere. It makes a big difference where the high point of the noon sun is located in the sky, especially in the large temperate zones of earth. Plus or minus 23.5 degrees is significant.
