That bond is not created solely on being there for the birth. Many biologocal parents are not there for the birth of thier children due to work/war etc. The bond that is created is one that is built on security and friendship. It's the experiences throught the years that create a strong bond. It's having someone there for you when you need them and being there when someone needs you. In my situation, I have a stronger bond with my step-father than my real father, and he didn't even come into my life until I was 14.

I don't think the step-parent/child relationship can ever really be as strong as one between biological parent/child. The bond can be incredibly strong between them, but I don't think anything ever compares to the emotional connection one feels with their own offspring.
