On every car I've owned the windshield insert on the drivers side seems to always wear out before the one on the passenger side. Is this just bad luck, or is there a reason for this?

The "swipe area" on wiper blades is often asymmetrical; the driver side wiper is often a larger area, which means that for each swipe, there's more wear on the driver's side blade. That would be my guess. Good question... never thought about it :)
