Most European countries colonialized Africa in the 1700 & 1800's. France had most of the norther countries, which is why they speak African French today. England had the southern tip. Belgium had a great deal of the southern central region (modern day Congo, Zambia) Spain and Portugal had some territories in the West. Most countries officially earned independance in the 1960's, but some were not until much later. This was done primarily for slave trade, which the Arabs did as well, but they didn't colonialize. The Arabs didn't recognize the European claims, so they just went through the territories on their own. A great book to read to understand the colonializing and slave trade abuse is "King Leopold's Ghost" by Adam Hoschild. It is about King Leopold who was the king of Belgium during colonialization.
