  • Some one owns it. Go to your County Assessor's Office. They have complete maps and owner's records. You can find out who the owner is and contact them about buying it. As long a someones paying the taxes on it, they can let it sit there for 100 years if they want to.
  • Make a flag. Stick it in the earth saying, "In the name of (fill in the blank) I claim this land!" Or go to city hall for the land records.
  • If you improved it for about seven years, and no one showed up to say "get off my land" then you could own it. I don't know what paperwork, etc, you'd have to go through, possible a court appereance if the orginal owners tried to take it back (after 7 years), Taxes, etc. It has been done tho.
  • Check with the County Offices. It may belong to the County having been taken for taxes. You can buy it for the price of the taxes or less. There really isn't any land that doesn't belong to someone/something in the US.
  • Go to the tax office and make sure no one is paying taxes on the land. Paying taxes is in essance ownership. You would have to go to an attorney, hire a title company, and a land surveyor. If you are on a platted lot there may be restrictions on how you can use the land. Please note, if their is a lien on the unclaimed land or other legal matters pertaining to the land and somehow you are able to accuire the land you will be liable for the encubrances.
  • Be careful. Some land is known as a right of way. In that case, the town, borough, city may not relinquish it. Start at the courthouse. Check out the plat books, check with the register of deeds. Make sure there are no liens on the property or you may end up paying them.Get advise from a good real estate attorney after you have done all of the above. Hope this helps. Not all property reverts to the attaching property owner after a period of time.
