It's actually a scientific fact based on game theory. The best survival strategy in a gene pool with limited resources is to forgive damaging behaviour twice before retaliating: organisms who display this kind of altruism soon dominate the gene pool. Strange but true; I've seen the computer simulation, looked closely at the theory, thought about it for weeks, and it makes perfect sense.
