I know Nelson Rockefeller got the job as his Vice-President, but I don't know who else tried out for it... edit - wikipedia says that his leading competitor was George Bush Snr.

George H.W. Bush and Donald Rumsfeld. Ford made Donald Rumsfeld his Chief of Staff and Rumsfeld chose a 33 year old Dick Chaney as his deputy. Later, Ford would select George H.W. Bush to head the CIA in 1976.
