My PS2 has been having some issues with DVD's and PS2 games loading. Sometimes they will load while other times it will either say "Unable to read disc", go back to the memory card screen, or freeze. What could the problem be?

If it is one of the BIG PS2's the same exact thing happened to me, and i am sorry to say there is absolutely nothing you can do, the best i did was manage to somehow sell it on Ebay for 90 bucks, then bought a smaller version.....the big PS2's had manufacturing kinks, so most of the are screwed up, and will do whats its doing to you to everybody.

Well, unfortunately, mine IS a bigger PS2 so I'm royally screwed. I guess I can buy a newer slimline PS2 and hopefully this doesn't happen with it. I've had this PS2 since '03 and hadn't had a problem until now so this sucks to say the least.

I read that adjusting the lens higher relieves this on the big ps2's. This adjustment seems non-existant on the slim-line.I relieved this same type of issue on my DVD player by increasing the lazer's power output.works well now.I just made this adjustment on my ps2 slim, hopefully this will releave problems we're experiencing.

This is a permutation of the famous DRE problem. What's happening is that the laser inside of your PS2 is dying. There are a few ways to fix this. First, try using a DVD cleaner quite a few times. This is a temporary fix, but it can work for a while. This, I presume, just makes sure that the lens is clean enough to let the weak laser read the disc. If that doesn't work, you can try cleaning things out with a can of compressed air. To do a good job, you may have to open the system. Then, there's the voltage raising system, where you add power to the laser by tightening some screws in the back. I've never done this method, but there are many guides for them. Just search Google for PS2 DRE guide, and you should find quite a few. Of course, if your PS2 is under warranty, don't open it up, but if you don't have one, there's very little to lose.

You can adjust the up and down level of the lens on the larger models.If that does'nt work then try raising the power output on the under-side of the lens,note that increasing output probably shortens the life of the lens,but if it doesnt function as it is now what good does the longer life of the lens serve? Raising up the power will give you extended life from an already exhausted device. Replacement lenses are available over the net. So use the older worn lens in a life-shortening state untill it finally does burn-out, but have a replacement ordered and on its way.
