How do you refrain from gossiping if you're surrounded by people who love to gossip?

When they gossip about someone you know tell them "______" is a friend of mine and I really dont want to hear that. They will get the picture and stop spreading it...... Around you anyways.

Smile a lot and keep silent

I frequently and repeatedly try to change the subject...they eventually get my point and stop gossiping when I'm in the room....if the gossip is really bad (like when people discuss really personal or bad things about another) I confront them.

A lot of times, I will mention something positive about the person who is being ripped apart.
