It depends. In some ways, movies of the past were graded more leniently than movies today. Take for example Steven Speilberg's "Poltergeist" from the early 80s. There is a mom smoking a joint, a stuffed animal strangling a boy and dragging him under a bed, corpses, a man ripping his face off, cursing, and a million other things and it was PG. Of course, Speilberg probably paid of the ratings board in order to achieve this and children (like myself at that time) were traumatized for life by watching something they weren't prepared to see. I don't think the ratings board can be so easily influenced anymore and I imagine they have a tight criteria now for rating things. If that movie were ever to come out today, it would definitely be an R.
