  • better late than never?
  • Yup, but were talking about the stupid vatican. There abunch of dumbasses anyways.
  • Yeah, where did that come from? Did he ask to be forgiven? I might be able to see it if that was the case, but 42 years is a long time to hold a grudge. Somehow, I don't think this is the case and Lennon probably couldn't care less.
  • That is pretty stupid. But every few years Charles Manson goes through the motions of a parole hearing. Now in my opinion thats really stupid and a waste of time.
  • i think they need to develop a sense of humour about it; I think what he said was tongue-in-cheek.
  • Did someone ask the Vatican to forgive him? Why on earth would they concentrate on that now? I can't imagine John would care one way or another what they think.
  • Yes, that is pretty damn stupid! But I have heard more stupid - the vatican refused to believe Galileo until about 1990 or so!
  • Yeah, it is a more than a little silly. I think the remark was "We are more popular than Jesus", or something like that. He apologized later saying it was just a figure of speech, which I am sure it was,...though not a wise one.
  • What's to forgive? I'm a Christian but he stated a fact, sadly true.
  • I think the Vatican is the house of stupid people?
  • i think it is never too late to make amends
  • Yeah I find that incredibly stupid. Honestly they burned hundreds of his records because he said the Beetles were more popular than Jesus. What are these people? Three years old? "Ahhhh! He said Jesus wasn't cool! He said the Beetles were cool! Burn! Burn!" LOL
  • The band collectively apologized for his comment, but wow the major protests and record burnings were a trip to see. Frankly, it was a stupid thing for him to say, but then again, it shows later on Lennon wasn't much of a beliver in things of a "Christian" nature...
  • I imagine its a good political move - 40th anniversary is bound to bring up such issues and do even more damage to the Vatican's image. Let's face it, Lennon was being flippant, also probably ironic as it was probably the truth! - at least as far as the young people of the time were concerned. Why would Lennon apologize - he meant it even if it was a joke?
  • Since the Vatican was the party offended, they can choose when to forgive. An apology is not required for forgiveness to be given. Forgiveness is a gift.
  • It took the Vatican 359 years to forgive Galileo for saying that the Earth was not the center of the universe. So, what's the big deal about waiting only 40 years to forgive John Lennon?
  • Maybe they are reaching out to "sinners" and forgiving them to clean the slate. I don't know why anyone's shorts would get in a knot over that. At least he acknowledged Jesus and didn't say that there is no God and that Jesus was just a real nice guy and nothing special. People say what they will..doesn't mean it is true. Why others care what people say I don't understand. Now, if he had taken some action that harmed someone, that is a different kettle of fish. So he said what he said 40 years ago..maybe the Vatican is cleaning house..if they went back to something that happened 40 years ago, maybe they are doing a very thorough house cleaning. :)
  • the beatles where bigger than christ when he said it. more people where buying beatles lp's than bibles so he was stating a fact.
  • Yes, I have. Attempts by various groups to get the US to "apologize" and give restitution to current people for slavery, for "stealing land" from Mexico, for "stealing" land from various peoples, etc.
  • I don't really see what the problem is. Sure, it doesn't have much point now, but it would never have had much of a point....ever.
  • Yeah, saying that they were 'more popular than Jesus Christ was definitely as stupid. And their record sales afterwards proved it.
