Cremation is a lot cheaper than a burial.

Cremation is usually cheaper than a standard burial. With a burial, there is the price of the casket, and embalming the body, if a public veiwing is desired. Many cemeteries require that the casket is placed in a vault, so there is the cost of that, not to mention the cost of digging the grave. There is also the cost of a headstone. This type of funeral can cost thousands of dollars. Cremation can be carried out for much less. The cheapest I've seen was less than $700, and that included the cremation casket, the cremation itself, and the urn.

Cremation just by itself can be cheaper than burial just by itself. It's all the other things that can run up the cost: funerals, viewings, caskets, flowers, obituaries, and on and on. In some cases, cremation can cost much more than some burials.
