  • When you buy a used car from a dealership the title is never given right out that is what they charge you plate, title and the customary doc fees for. The title is applied for by dealer to your name to insure them that you don't get into an accident before the car is in your name and blame the previous owner or them if they bought it at auction (car would trace back to them). as far as the duplicate title it could be that the previous owner lost the first one not too uncommon as long as you got temp plates that trace back to the car's vin# and your name is on the owner's registration card that the dealer has to give you with your temp plates your ok. Permanent plates can take up to 30 days from a dealership because they usually wait for a bunch of sales first so they don't have to go to the DMV more than twice a month.
  • In Massachusetts it is illegal to sell a vehicle if you are not in possesion of the title, as there can be other issues about why they dont have the title. Some of whiich I have seen that fact alone hold up the sale of a car for 3 weeks, when the person was driving it, they did not technically own the vehicle, because the title is the actual and legal bill of sale that all of that other paperwork has to match. Which make the insurance possibly an issue. I would make sure you are ok in that aspect as well.
