  • Would it have a round end and a flat end, the flat end being 'silver' and magnetic? If so it sounds like a nanocache from www.geocaching.com. The paper roll is called a log, and being so small would only contain a geocaching username, and the date it was found. Although the 'cache' is probably now archived, he could put it back for others to find, open and date their find. If you are able I would recommend getting a handheld GPS and join in the fun.
